Singing with Grace
Colossians 3:12-15

15
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

When Dorothy, baby-sits her grandson, Billy, she seems to have the magic formula for making him contented when he is fussy or crying. She sings to him these children’s songs: “Jesus Loves Me” and “Jesus Loves the Little Children.” Their calming effect on the little fellow is amazing and consistent. Dorothy also sings to the babies in her church nursery. She has found the technique also works there.

Paul instructed the Colossian Christians to sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to one another that the word of Christ might dwell richly in them. Perhaps he knew, as Dorothy has discovered, singing has therapeutic benefits. We have learned this type of singing also goes beyond mere therapy for babies and adults. There is both peace and power in the word “Jesus.” Yes, there is something about that name.

Father, help me to remember the peace and calming benefits that come when singing to others about Jesus.
