Preparing the Way

Through Prophecy
Malachi 4:5-6

Read the Bible through:
AM –
Daniel 3 : PM – 2 Peter 1

Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord
(Malachi 4:5).

My favorite time of the year is Christmas. We know the story of the Christ’s being born in a manger. But how often do we stop to thing that the events leading up to the birth of Jesus were foretold many years before they actually occurred?

Chapter four of Malachi explains the coming of a prophet who would help prepare the way for the Lord. While Elijah the prophet is mentioned, the New Testament saw the fulfillment of this prophecy in John the Baptist. He was considered an “Elijah” in his time because he called God’s people to repentance.

John’s role in the Christmas story is rarely told. An angel prophesied John’s birth, and he was born six months prior to Jesus. The reason he is so important is that he prophesied the coming of the kingdom of God and salvation through Jesus. He alerted people that the kingdom of heaven was at hand.

Lord, use me as a voice to announce to others the good news about salvation through Jesus.
