Ephesians 6:1-4

4 “You, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord”

I had a lot of fun teasing our children when they were growing up. My mother-in-law would often rush over and tug on a laughing child in my arms and say, “You know what Paul said about provoking your children’s wrath.”

Paul was not talking about gentle teasing and play, but about families where debates and arguments become biting, critical and bitter and where the feelings of children are hurt and relationships in the family are broken.

Beautiful words from an old hymn “God of Grace and God of Glory” remind us of our responsibilities to our children.”

Cure thy children’s warring madness,
Bend our pride to Thy control;
Shame our wanton, selfish gladness,
Rich in thing and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, Grant us courage,
Lest we miss Thy kingdom’s goal.
Lest we miss Thy kingdom’s goal.

Father, help me to be the kind of parent and teacher You desire me to be.
