The psalmist probably meant his guidance came from the whole of God’s written Word, not just some verses of it. He was fortunate to know its truth so well. Documents had to be hand written then. Only some of the writings of our Old Testament had been written, and they were preserved in cumbersome rolls. There were no chapter or verse divisions in them. Still, the psalmist found in God’s truth a treasure to be guarded in the vault of his heart.
How fortunate we are today! We have the whole of God’s Word, clearly printed and bound between lovely covers. Often it is even rendered in large letters for readers like me. And today we have the completed Bible to treasure. We have the words of Jesus and of the inspired writers who help us all to understand Him. We have concordances, commentaries, chapters, verses, and so much more the ancients did not have. If the psalmist felt enriched to have God’s Word to guide him, how wealthy should we think ourselves to be.
Dear Lord, please help me to appreciate Your Word and to find needed guidance in it.
