The Bible: The Family’s Source of Instruction

Read the Bible through:
AM –
Jeremiah 31 : PM – 1 Thessalonians 3

The Way of Hope
Psalm 119:49-56

54 “Your statutes have been my songs In the house of my pilgrimage.”

The lyrics of the songs one likes to sing or listen to can tell things about that person. All kinds of lyrics are out there. Some are about violence and hatred. Some are vulgar. Some are sweetly romantic. Some are spiritual. Some I can’t even understand. We ought to consider more carefully how popular lyrics affect people’s personalities and actions.

When the psalmist stopped in a resting place on his journeys, the “music” that calmed his heart and increased his hope was based on the character, the deeds, and the will of the God he served. Those precepts were songs that lifted and challenged him.

What are the characteristics of our God that gladden us most as we think of them? His wisdom? His power? His love for us? His love for the lost? His ever present grace? Perhaps the divine characteristic that means the most to us depends upon our needs at the time we let Him be our songs. Like the psalmist, we can let God’s divine lyrics be the songs we sing when our hopes need lifting in our life journeys.

Lord, let the teachings of your Word be the song that gladdens my heart today.
