Sin: What Went Wrong?

Accepting God's provision
Genesis 3:20-21

Also for Adam and his wife the LORD God made tunics of skin, and clothed them
(Gen. 3:21).

In Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic, The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne was sentenced to wear the letter, "A," sewn to her clothing as a public admission of her sin of adultery. The New England Puritan community in which she lived meted out justice to the errant woman and punished her accordingly. They forced her to wear her guilt and shame publicly every day of her life.

When Adam and Eve sinned, they too suffered the consequences of their transgression. But rather than allowing them to wear their guilt and shame in nakedness, God provided coverings for their bodies. With justice, God also meted out grace. We can trace the path of God's grace toward the sinner from the Garden of Eden to the Garden of Gethsemane. By His grace, God still covers the shame and guilt of the sinner. For you and me, He provided a covering with the blood of His own Son.

How I praise You, Lord, for Your unfathomable grace that provided a covering for my sin and shame.
