Some people fantasize about receiving large inheritances from wealthy relatives. Many of them, however, are missing the largest of all inheritances – children of the God of heaven and earth. God’s children are His heirs. God of course never will die, but He shares bountifully with all His children. We have already received much of our legacy, and we have confident hope of sharing in His eternal kingdom.
The father in Jesus’ parable said to the angry elder son: “Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours.” (Luke 15:31). A word learned early by children is “mine.” When we selfishly grasp something and lay exclusive claim to it, we miss the rich legacy that the Father wants to give to all His heirs. Children of God recognize that the best things in life are from the Father.
Father, enlarge my vision of what it means to be an heir of the King of the universe.
