This is the 145th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address. These are two of the documents that show why Abraham Lincoln is sometimes called the Great Emancipator. He is justly honored for his role in preserving the union and in freeing the slaves. But Lincoln and other famous liberators in history are examples that point to the Ultimate Liberator. Jesus Christ came to see people free from sin and death.
Jesus said, “I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin” (John 8:34). He also claimed, “If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:36). Galatians 5:2 is a key verse in the Letter to the churches of Galatia. It is the pinnacle of the theme of freedom in the Letter. It magnifies Jesus as the One who has made us free. Christians stand fast in the freedom that Jesus gives.
Lord, thank You for setting me free from sin and death. Help me to stand fast in this freedom
