WALKING BY THE SPIRIT
Romans 8:1

1 "There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”

Many health experts say walking is one of the best forms of physical exercise. The Bible often uses the word for “walk” to describe how a person lives day by day. Romans 8:1 contrasts two ways of life. One way is walking “after the flesh”; the other way is walking “after the Spirit.”

When Paul used the word “flesh” in this way, he was referring to the sinful way of living of people who do not know Christ or His Spirit. Their sins included sensual sins but also sins such as envy and anger.

Living after the Spirit means living in relationship and obedience to the Spirit of the Lord. One word is repeated over and over in Romans 7:14-24. It is the word “I.” This is the way of the flesh. The word “Spirit” is predominant in Romans 8.

The Spirit of the crucified risen Lord assures us He has set us free from condemnation by sin.

Spirit of God, fill me with Your presence and power so that I may walk in Your ways.
