KEEPING THE BOND OF PEACE
Ephesians 4:1-3

3 “Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

The barrel was the kind people once used to catch rainwater. Curved staves were fastened to the barrel’s base. A metal band around the middle held the staves together. Tipping the barrel on its side, my friends and I enjoyed rolling over it. The fun stopped when the band loosened and the staves fell apart. As we tried in vain to reassemble the barrel, we learned the importance of the band around the middle. We started with a strong, well-constructed barrel; but we didn’t keep it that way and couldn’t repair it when it broke.

The Holy Spirit binds believers together in the church. He creates Christian unity. We receive the Spirit’s good work and have the task of keeping what He provides. To our loss, we can fail to maintain unity in the church. When the band of peace is broken our unity falls apart. Only a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit can recreate church unity.

Dear Lord, thank You for the gift of the bond of peace.
