Fellowshipping Together

Steadfast in Fellowship
Acts 2:42

42 “They continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.”

"A church wide fellowship will follow the evening service." Through the years I have read such an announcement in church bulletins. The thought of a church fellowship still brings quite an array of images and aromas to mind: cookies, soft drinks, freezer of homemade ice cream, slices of cold watermelon, and freshly baked cakes. The eating accompanied rich times of informal conversation and friendship building.

Most likely, none of these images came to anyone's mind when the early believers in Jerusalem practiced steadfast fellowship. The opportunity to hear instruction from Jesus' apostles and to join together in observing the Lord's Supper drew them together.

At the heart of biblical fellowship is a sharing in common of cherished spiritual realities. Our common life in Christ lies at the root of fellowship. The refreshments are enjoyable but not essential to steadfast fellowship.

Father, help me seek fellowship with other believers that centers on deep, inward, and shared spiritual realities.
