A young man testified in our church in 1984 about how the Lord was sustaining him after his wife’s brutal murder. I decided to interview him and submit his story to a magazine. He was a single father to an infant daughter, was active in the singles department, and was giving his testimony in various churches. Eighteen months later he robbed an armored truck, killed two FBI men, and wounded several others before he was killed. His pastor was devastated that he and others had been deceived by his double life.
The Jerusalem church was experiencing sweet fellowship and great power when Ananias and Sapphira decided to lie before God and the church to gain recognition for themselves. While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God. God does not take lightly dishonor to His name. He knows our secret motives. Are they consistent with the life and witness we give to others?
Lord, purify my heart that my life and words will honor you.
