Jesus, in His typical fashion, used physical things to illustrate spiritual truths. He pointed to a mustard seed and compared it to the kingdom of God. It held great potential, and when planted it would grow large. Both are true of the kingdom of God.
The kingdom of God grows in two ways. It grows when lost people accept Jesus as Savior. It also grows as Christians continue to surrender their lives over to the lordship of Jesus. Both of these require prayer. We should pray to the Lord of the harvest that He will send workers into the field. We also should pray without ceasing, lest we fall into temptation.
For now the kingdom of God is within all believers (Luke 17:21). There will come a day when Jesus will return in glory to perfect the kingdom. And to this end we should pray “Even so, Lord Jesus, come.”
Lord, Thy Kingdom come to earth, within me and around me, as it is in heaven.
