Two powerful storms raged on the same night in 1748. One happening involved a storm at sea; the other experience was occurring in the heart of a man named John Newton, the writer of “Amazing Grace! How Sweet the Sound.” This sea captain was sailing his slave ship to England with a cargo of humans when a powerful storm waterlogged the ship. The second storm was the heart-changing conversion of this sinful man, who discovered the benefits of praying for protection. He came to a saving faith in Christ, and until his death devoted his life to his powerful God.
God also spoke to David. David understood God was the source of power and steadfast love. This communication with God guaranteed the psalmist justice would be done. His enemies would be controlled. Prayer to God would result in protection for David.
Do you find strength in knowing God is strong and loving? How does Mark 9:23 encourage your faith?
Lord, help me not to measure people by their power, but to claim You, only, as the God of all power.
