39 “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me”
Jesus’ hearers thought the act of reading Scriptures alone brought them all the blessings they needed. Sadly they had failed to discover the message of their Scriptures – Jesus as the source of eternal life.
Those who read God’s Word with a searching mind allow it to be an instrument through which the Father speaks to them. This blessing comes not through thoughtless reading. It comes through letting God lead searchers through His Word to deeper dedication.
Probably few today read Scriptures with the faithfulness of Jesus’ ancient opponents. Yet they rejected Jesus! What an amazing contradiction of the very Word they read. Finding God’s message in Scriptures today helps us instead to honor Him as the genuine source of eternal life.
Lord, please help me to search Your Word for truth and to put that truth into action when the reading is done.
