A friend of mine made a commitment several years ago to walk two miles a day. Every afternoon she came home from work, changed into her walking clothes, and set off on her two-mile hike. If it started to rain while she was out, she kept right on going. No matter what else her day included, walking was a commitment she made and resolved to honor.
Most of us marveled at the way she kept her commitment. When we pressed her about it she answered, “The consequences of not walking are greater than the inconveniences of staying with it.” Routine is a safety net for a commitment. It gets us up, keeps us going, and provides the necessary structure for accomplishing a task.
God warned in Ecclesiastes 5:4 to be careful about making vows. An integral part of doing so is keeping them. May we, as did the people of Joshua’s generation, be faithful in keeping our commitments.
Lord, help me keep my commitments and honor You with my life.
